The AI Salon will have a small discussion on July 9th focused on Guardrails! Will guardrails hinder AI's benefits, or do "guardrails let you drive fast"? Is "driving fast" important, or should we have a longer time horizon in mind when deploying impactful technologies like AI? In short, what form of safeguards allows us to maximally benefit from AI while avoiding undue risk?

what's the time span for these guardrails? a few years? 20 years? 100 years? the next 1,000 years? what would such ideas look like with long time spans? So much of the AI discussion has a very short time focus.

That's an important dimension for sure! People are concerned with guardrails of all kinds, from instantiating IP and copyright controls (short term, based in our current society and laws), to keeping track of the frontier of AI capabilities (X-risk adjacent, long term).
